Shin Megami Tensei is a remastered version of the original Super Famicom title, featuring enhanced visuals, refined gameplay, and an added difficulty setting. The game employs first-person dungeon exploration and turn-based combat against demonic foes. Players have the option to recruit demons as companions through dialogue instead of battle, and can combine two to three demons to form new, powerful entities.
The story starts with the Hero dreaming of a meeting with the Law Hero, the Chaos Hero, and a woman named Yuriko, who vows to become his ally. He awakens to find an email containing a computer program for summoning demons. While running an errand, he discovers that a scientist has opened a portal to the Expanse, enabling demons to enter Tokyo. He also meets Yuriko, who confirms her intent to keep her promise. The following night, the Hero dreams once more of the Law Hero and Chaos Hero, who rescue the Heroine from a sacrificial ceremony. The next day, he encounters the Law Hero and Chaos Hero in real life; they reveal they had the same dream. As news of the demons spreads, the US military, under the command of ambassador Thorman, decides to take action. The Japan Self-Defense Forces, led by general Gotou, resist, believing demons to be ancient land spirits. A third faction, led by the Heroine, attempts to mediate between the two. She is captured by Gotou’s forces and nearly executed under Yuriko’s watch, but is rescued by the Hero, Law Hero, and Chaos Hero. The Hero must choose to support Thorman, Gotou, or neither; no matter his decision, the conflict intensifies until Thorman fires missiles at Tokyo. The Heroine is killed, but she uses magic to teleport the Hero, Law Hero, and Chaos Hero to another realm, saving their lives.
