Summary
Half a century has passed since the hero of *Shin Megami Tensei* chose the neutral path, vanquished the leaders of Law and Chaos, and established a nation where both ideologies could coexist in peace. Yet this era of freedom is short-lived. The Messian faith rises to power, expanding the Cathedral into a sealed-off metropolis called Tokyo Millennium. The Gaians resist, but their uprising is crushed by the elite warrior order of the Messians, the Temple Knights. Citizens pour into the walled city, accepting the rigid structure enforced by the Messian Center, where only the privileged in the Center district are shielded from demonic attacks. Years later, a former arena fighter named Okamoto saves a man named Hawk, who was battling for his life against a demon. He trains Hawk to compete in the Valhalla district’s arena, with the hope that winning the tournament will grant them both citizenship in the Center district. When Hawk emerges victorious, he is brought before a Messian bishop and discovers the startling truth about his origins and the destiny he must fulfill in the unfolding conflict. A new struggle for a brighter future begins. *Shin Megami Tensei II* keeps all the core gameplay elements from its predecessor. Players can summon demons, fuse them to create stronger ones, send them into battle, and even converse with random enemies to gain valuable information. Combat remains turn-based, and the player navigates the intricate, maze-like dungeons using a first-person perspective. As in the first game, the Law, Chaos, and Neutral alignments remain crucial: throughout the story, the player’s choices will shape the protagonist’s alignment and determine the direction the narrative takes. New additions include a "magic succession" system, allowing demons to retain their original spells when fused into new forms, a few new spells and abilities, and the ability to visit a casino and earn rare items through gambling.

And even now, it continues to exist...as "Tokyo Millennium"; the city of the messiah faith. A faith that has drawn the hopes and hearts of millions yearning for the Messiah's arrival. Initially built with the dream of realizing the Thousand Year Kingdom, neither God nor the Messiah ever appeared within its walls. Time passed, and soon, its citizens were no longer equal. At the head of Millennium stands the governing body known as Center. Reporting directly to the Center are the Temple Knights, an elite military unit that functions as the city's police force. The top citizens of Millennium are the First Rank, who enjoy the privilege of living freely within the Center. Those who own an Arm Terminal are considered Second Rank Citizens. The lowest tier consists of those merely recognized as residents of Tokyo Millennium, the Common Rank Citizens. One of the most affluent districts in Millennium is the Valhalla Area, renowned for its brutal arena combat, a tradition that continues to this day. Fighters risk their lives to entertain the bloodthirsty crowds. Recently, a new combatant known as "Hawk" has emerged like a shooting star: the audience is stunned by his skill, the crowds go wild for his unbroken winning streak, but no one knows his identity or origins...Not even Hawk himself.
