Summary
Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix is a video game developed by Raven Software, serving as a follow-up to Soldier of Fortune. The game was built using the Quake III: Team Arena engine. Raven once again brought in John Mullins as a consultant for the project. Taking feedback and critiques from the first game into account, Raven Software aimed to make Soldier of Fortune II more "realistic," drawing inspiration from tactical shooters such as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, rather than from Quake. A follow-up titled Soldier of Fortune: Payback, developed by Cauldron HQ, was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in 2007.
Storyline
The sequel's central theme revolves around biological warfare, as mercenary Mullins and his new ally, Madeline Taylor, journey to Colombia to probe a viral outbreak in a remote town, eventually connecting it to a clandestine group known as Prometheus. The virus, named Romulus, is succeeded by a digital threat called Remus, designed to erase files from computers worldwide—specifically those related to Prometheus and Romulus—thereby preventing the development of an antivirus. Prometheus then leverages the crisis to extort the G8 nations during a summit in Switzerland, demanding billions of dollars. As the game progresses, it becomes clear that a spy within The Shop may be leaking sensitive information to the terrorists.
