Somari is a side-scrolling platform game first released in 1994 for the Famicom. An unauthorized version of Sega's 1991 Sega Genesis title Sonic the Hedgehog, it was mainly sold in Asia, Russia, and other areas where pirated NES cartridges were common. Much like the original, the game's story centers on stopping the eccentric scientist Doctor Robotnik, who seeks to transform the creatures of the fictional South Island into malevolent robots. However, instead of Sonic, the game features Nintendo's iconic character Mario as the hero. The name "Somari" is a blend of "Sonic" and "Mario."
