Sonic Adventure 2 shares the same title but is in fact a remaster of the original Sonic Adventure 2, featuring enhanced graphics and assets from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.
Discovering a hidden weapon detailed in the journal of his late grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, Eggman breaks into a top-secret G.U.N. installation and reactivates it using a Chaos Emerald. The weapon—a black hedgehog who calls himself the "Ultimate Life Form," named Shadow—agrees to assist Eggman in taking over the world, instructing him to meet at the derelict space station, ARK, with additional Chaos Emeralds. Shadow travels to Central City, clashing with G.U.N. troops after stealing an Emerald. Driven by a vow he made to a girl named Maria, which he sees as a pledge of vengeance, Shadow fights through the military and faces Sonic. After a short battle, Shadow escapes, and G.U.N. captures Sonic, believing him to be Shadow. At the same time, Knuckles comes across Rouge and Eggman, who are attempting to steal the Master Emerald. He halts them by destroying the Emerald and sets out to track down its scattered pieces. Rouge, working as a government informant, makes her way to Eggman's hideout and the ARK. There, Shadow reveals the Eclipse Cannon, another powerful weapon built by Gerald, and outlines his strategy: to power the cannon with Chaos Emeralds and use it to dominate the world. Rouge arrives and offers them a Chaos Emerald to earn their confidence.
