Sonic Chaos is a fan-made game and re-interpretation of the 1993 Sega Game Gear and Master System platformer with the same title. Drawing from the modern style of 2D classic Sonic games like Sonic Mania, Sonic Chaos enhances the original's 8-bit graphics and adopts a gameplay experience more in line with traditional 16-bit Sonic titles.
The narrative unfolds on South Island, home to the powerful Chaos Emeralds. While Sonic and Miles "Tails" Prower were away on a mission, Dr. Eggman seized one of the Emeralds for himself. This act caused the remaining Emeralds to disperse across the island. Without their energy, South Island started to collapse into the ocean. Learning of Eggman's scheme, Sonic and Tails returned to find the island in disarray. With time running out, they set out to stop Eggman and prevent the island's destruction by recovering the Emeralds. In Western versions, the story was streamlined. Driven by his desire for global domination, Dr. Robotnik stole the red Chaos Emerald to build nuclear bombs and laser weapons. This disrupted the balance of the Emeralds, sending them to a parallel universe. As South Island began to sink without their power, Sonic and Tails embarked on a mission to halt Dr. Robotnik and restore harmony by retrieving the Emeralds.
