Summary
Sonic Classic Collection is a video game compilation for the Nintendo DS, developed by The Creative Assembly Australia, with oversight from Sega Australia and Sega of Europe. It brings together the following titles: Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic & Knuckles (featuring Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and Knuckles in Sonic 2). The compilation was officially revealed on December 2, 2009, by Sega of America and launched on March 2, 2010. However, word of the collection first surfaced when it was classified by the Australian Government's OFLC. The collection includes two additional lock-on modes from the original games, enabling players to take control of Knuckles in Sonic 2 and experience the full version of Sonic 3 (labeled "Knuckles in Sonic 3" instead of the original "Sonic 3 & Knuckles"). The games also feature a save function; while players can save at any point, they must restart the act from where they saved. However, they retain their score, Chaos Emeralds, and any extra lives or continues earned. The collection also offers a gallery of images. Originally, the compilation was intended to include Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and Sonic 3D Blast, but none of these titles were included in the final release. The game received mixed to positive reviews from critics, earning a 70 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics praised the quality of the included games but criticized the absence of a multiplayer mode and the limited additional content, which consisted only of the included artwork.
