In an earlier era of Green Hill, Classic Sonic is sprinting when he hears a strange sound. Suddenly, the enigmatic being called the Time Eater emerges in the sky, and the screen turns completely white. In the current time, Sonic is enjoying his birthday with his friends when the Time Eater interrupts the celebration, pulling everyone through various "time holes" and scattering them throughout Sonic’s past. Sonic attempts to confront the creature, but quickly finds himself overpowered. After waking up, he discovers he's in a bizarre dimension called White Space, a place where time and space end up once they’ve been drained of color and vitality. Sonic rescues his close friend Miles "Tails" Prower, and as they search for their missing companions, they come across past versions of themselves, known as their "Classic" forms. As the two Tails realize that the Time Eater’s actions are corrupting time and space, making it white and barren, both the "Classic" and "Modern" Sonics travel through their history, mending time and saving their friends. Along the way, they also discover that the Chaos Emeralds are the Time Eater’s weakness.
