Summary

Sonic Wings Special is a 1996 vertical-scrolling shooter that brings together the features of Sonic Wings, Sonic Wings 2, and Sonic Wings 3. It was later released in arcades as Sonic Wings Limited. The home console edition introduces new characters and endings, additional bosses, enhanced visuals, and unlockable aircraft. It also includes Time Attack and 2-player modes. The game features a branching stage system, making it impossible to experience all levels in a single playthrough. There are 14 playable characters and numerous endings (some of which are carried over from earlier games in the series). The game has a lighthearted, comic-style presentation. As of Summer 2012, the Android version of Sonic Wings Special includes only 4 playable characters, 4 endings, and 9 stages. However, the publisher plans to add more content from the original version in the future.

Storyline

In the near future, a clandestine "organization" operates beneath the surface of a world that appears to be at peace. The true identity of this "organization" remains hidden, and all that has been uncovered through frantic efforts by various nations is that the "organization" seeks to dismantle global stability, that their arsenal is powered by uncharted scientific forces, and that the "organization" is known as "Fata Morgana." To counter "Fata Morgana," a transnational coalition named "Project Blue" was established. Officially, it is a special unit under the United Nations, but in truth, it is a team of elite fighters from across the globe. Project Blue waged its war in secrecy, but the balance shifted abruptly. "Fata Morgana," having infiltrated and seized control of the military cores of multiple nations, initiated a worldwide coup. Chaos erupted across the globe, and "Fata Morgana" swiftly extended its dominion from one region to the next. Yet this was not the only danger. Intelligence gathered by a section officer revealed that "Fata Morgana" was nearing completion of a devastating weapon capable of wiping out two-thirds of Earth's population with a single strike. At this critical juncture, Project Blue's covert efforts were no longer sufficient. An urgent directive was issued to all existing team members and a global recruitment drive was launched—by any means necessary. Time was running out. Captain Lord River-n-White issued the command: "All weapons cleared for use. Initiate full-scale assault!" The enemy was everywhere, waiting.
