The objective of the game is to have your wizard generate and launch a fireball at the catapult that moves along the top of the screen. The controls in Spinning Fireball can be a bit tricky to get the hang of, which is just as well since you may not feel like playing for very long. To form your fireball, simply push and hold the joystick forward. Once the fireball begins to spin, press the fire button to launch it. The direction the fireball travels depends on the direction it was spinning when you pressed the button (similar to the hammer throw in Track and Field). If you're facing right, the fireball will spin clockwise; if you're facing left, it will spin counterclockwise. If your shot successfully strikes the catapult, you'll advance to the next level. If your fireball hits the sides of the screen, it will bounce back toward you. Similarly, if you fire it straight up, it will fall back down. If you're hit by your own misfired fireball, you'll lose a life. Additionally, the catapult at the top of the screen will occasionally fire a fireball at you—being hit by this will also cost you a life. You also have a limited amount of time to complete each level; if the timer runs out, you'll lose a life. The timer starts at five minutes for the first level and decreases by one minute for each subsequent level, reaching two minutes starting at level four.
