SpongeBob's Atlantis SquarePantis is a 2007 video game inspired by the Nickelodeon animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, based on the TV movie Atlantis SquarePantis. The Wii and PlayStation 2 editions were created by Blitz Games, while the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS versions were developed by Altron. This single-player and multiplayer action-adventure title features a variety of characters, including SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, and Plankton, each with unique abilities tied to their personalities. In the handheld versions, players control characters in pairs and can execute combined moves.
The adventure kicks off with SpongeBob and his pals fleeing from Atlantis. At the same time, Plankton goes on a rampage through Atlantis using a tank he "borrowed" until he runs into the group. SpongeBob and Patrick start to recall how they ended up in this predicament. A flashback begins, showing them playing with bubbles until they become trapped in a massive bubble that floats them into a cave. The pair navigates the cave, dodging ghost pirates and searching for ladders to go deeper, where they discover the missing half of the Atlantean Amulet (Patrick thinks it's connected to SpongeBob's ancestors because of the word "antis" on it). They bring it to the Bikini Bottom Museum to learn more, snapping photos of exhibits and clearing out tourists and security in their way. Squidward is stunned when they reveal the other half of the amulet. Sandy and Mr. Krabs join them as they walk through the museum. Squidward combines the two halves, revealing the path to Atlantis: a flying bus. The bus is powered by music, and the crew starts singing to reach Atlantis. The bus crash-lands mid-journey due to a mistake in Patrick's part, forcing the group to drive the bus around Atlantis to gather the bus pieces and tool kits needed for repairs. Once the bus is fixed and they arrive in Atlantis, they're welcomed by the Lord Royal Highness (or LRH). LRH gives them a tour of the Atlantean palace, where they must avoid traps set throughout the city for unknown reasons. Mr. Krabs starts collecting treasure with help from Sandy and her bubble-catching gun. Squidward strikes a pose for the artists in the art studio. Unbeknownst to the group, Plankton had hidden in the Atlantis bus compartment on the way over. He plans to use the Atlantean weapons, the most advanced ever created, to destroy SpongeBob and his friends and take over the world. After exiting the bus, he sneaks around Atlantis and heads for the weapon room. While snapping photos of attractions (also clearing out tourists and Atlantean guards in their path), Patrick accidentally destroys the oldest living bubble and tells the truth to LRH, who shows them the real one. Squidward points out that the bubble Patrick destroyed was just a prop for tourists. Patrick then pops the real one by accident, enraging LRH. The group makes a break for it, dodging Atlantean forces while searching for paper clips to unlock doors. Later, Sandy uses Squidward as a weapon to take down the soldiers. Plankton goes on a tank rampage through the city, just like at the start, and confronts the gang, ending the flashback. He fires his weapon, only to be shocked when it shoots ice cream. LRH captures Plankton, thinking he's just a talking speck, and displays him as a replacement for the recently destroyed bubble and as a new national treasure of Atlantis. He then orders a soldier to get rid of the amulet so the troublemakers can't return. The soldier travels across Atlantis to the dumpster and tosses the amulet in. The gang then returns home to Bikini Bottom aboard the bus.
