Star Trek: 25th Anniversary is a 1992 Game Boy title created by Visual Concepts and released by Ultra, set within the Star Trek universe. The game follows the adventures of James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise on a key mission. Although it shares its name with other versions, the Game Boy edition is not a re-release of the NES or computer games, but rather an entirely original title. It was later followed by Star Trek: The Next Generation for Game Boy, developed and published by Absolute Entertainment in the subsequent year.
Released in 1991, this game was meant to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1960s television series. The story centers on a massive "Doomsday Machine" that is wreaking havoc across Federation space, obliterating starships, planets, and other key assets. In response, the Federation has developed a powerful weapon to stop the threat, but the Klingons fear it will be turned against them. As a result, they steal the device and shatter it into 12 parts, scattering them across three different planets. Now, it's up to the Enterprise crew to journey to each of the three worlds, retrieve all 12 fragments, and ultimately destroy the Doomsday Machine. The game features two distinct gameplay styles. The first is a side-scrolling shooter where you command the Enterprise through treacherous asteroid fields and hostile enemy forces. The second is a top-down perspective in which you guide Captain Kirk across the surface of each planet to collect the weapon pieces.
