Super Mario 64: Shindou Pak Taiou Version
Summary
This Japanese-exclusive version of Super Mario 64 is an improved edition compared to the International version, featuring all the glitch fixes along with graphical and audio adjustments. Key differences include support for the Rumble Pak, minor bug corrections, and the removal of the infamous backwards long jump—a crucial move for speedrunners. It also includes a new title screen easter egg. The game was later made available on the iQue Player in China (without Rumble functionality) and on the Japanese Wii and Wii U Virtual Consoles. It eventually received an international release as part of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, titled "Super Mario 64," with slight visual upgrades.
Storyline
“Mario, please come to the castle. I've prepared a cake just for you. Yours in anticipation, Princess Toadstool.” “Wow, an invitation from Peach! I'll be there as soon as I can. I hope she doesn't mind waiting!” Mario is thrilled to receive the message from the princess, who resides in the Mushroom Castle, and without hesitation, he dresses in his finest and sets off immediately. “Hmmm, something feels off... It's too quiet in here...” Shaking off his growing sense of unease, Mario enters the eerily silent castle, only to be met with a gruff voice saying, “Nobody’s here! Beat it! Bwa, ha, ha.” The voice echoes from all directions. “Who’s there?! I’ve heard that voice before...” Determined, Mario begins exploring the castle. Most of the doors are locked, but he finds one ajar and peers inside. On the wall hangs the largest painting he’s ever seen, and from behind it comes a sound unlike anything he’s heard... “I think I hear someone calling. What could this painting be hiding?” Without hesitation, Mario leaps toward the painting. As he is pulled into it, a whole new world unfolds before him. Inside the painting, Mario is caught in the middle of a battle with Bob-ombs. According to the Bob-omb Buddies, a sudden attack has stolen the “Power Stars,” the magical gems that protect the castle. Now, the thief plans to use the stars to seize control of Mushroom Castle. To carry out this plan, the villain intends to turn the residents of the painting world into monsters. If left unchecked, these creatures will soon spill out of the painting and into the real world. “A scheme this twisted, this clever... this can only be Bowser!” Princess Toadstool and Toad are also missing. Bowser must have captured them and locked them inside the painting. If Mario doesn’t retrieve the Power Stars quickly, the people of this world will become part of Bowser’s monstrous army. “Well, Bowser won’t get away with this while I’m around!” The stolen Power Stars are scattered throughout the painting world. Use your skills and clever thinking to reclaim the Power Stars and bring peace back to the Mushroom Castle. “Mario! You're the only one we can rely on.”
