Taiko Drum Master is part of Namco's Taiko No Tatsujin rhythm game franchise and marks the first title to be released in the West. Like other rhythm games, the objective is to follow onscreen prompts by interacting with a special controller in time with the music. This version includes the TaTaCon drum controller, a small replica of a traditional Japanese taiko drum equipped with sensors on both the center and the sides. Gameplay involves responding to scrolling circle icons. Red circles signal the player to strike the center of the drum, while blue circles require a hit on the edge. When large circles appear, players can strike either the center or the edge to earn extra points. Yellow lines and balloons, on the other hand, prompt the player to perform rapid drum rolls. The game features a diverse selection of tracks, ranging from pop covers like *Material Girl* and *ABC* to music from other Namco titles such as *Katamari Damacy* and *Dragon Spirit*, as well as TV show themes. Additionally, the disc includes a variety of mini-games that creatively repurpose the TaTaCon for unusual activities like eating watermelon and stacking wolves.
