Team Fortress (TF) is a team- and class-based multiplayer first-person shooter mod built on id Software's Quake Engine, and later the QuakeWorld Engine. Originally known as Quake Team Fortress (QTF) and later QuakeWorld Team Fortress (QWTF), the mod was created in 1996 by Robin "Bro" Walker, John "Jojie" Cook, and Ian "Scuba" Caughley. Its widespread appeal led to the creation of countless mods not only for Team Fortress itself, but for other games as well. Valve took notice of the Team Fortress Software team and recruited the original developers to work on a Half-Life mod based on the franchise, which eventually became the standalone game Team Fortress Classic (TFC) in 1999. A direct follow-up to TFC, Team Fortress 2 (TF2), was developed by Valve and launched in 2007.
