Tears to Tiara is a Japanese tactical role-playing game for adult audiences.
The game is richly inspired by Welsh, Celtic, Christian, and Roman mythology, featuring characters such as Arawn, Arthur, Epona, Llŷr, Morgan, Pwyll, Rhiannon, and Taliesin. It takes place in a fantasy world inspired by Late Antiquity, beginning on the island of Erin (also labeled as Hibernia on in-game maps), located on the western edge of the Holy Empire. The prologue follows Rhiannon, a seer from the Gael tribe blessed with the gift of foresight. She is captured by Drwc, a renegade priest of the Holy Empire, who intends to use her in a ceremony to bring back the Demon King Arawn and gain his favor. In retaliation, the Gael people destroy their village and vow to either rescue Rhiannon or seek vengeance against the Empire. During the ritual, as the Gael launch a surprise attack on Drwc’s forces, Arawn is reborn and presented with Rhiannon. At this moment, he slays Drwc, releases Rhiannon, and denies the chaotic legacy the myths have given him. Instead, he expresses interest in Rhiannon’s brother, Arthur, the tribe’s First Warrior. Meanwhile, Rhiannon becomes enamored with Arawn and declares her intent to marry him, thereby naming him as the new chieftain of the Gael tribe (their late father had been the previous leader, but Arthur was ineligible due to his role as First Warrior). As the prologue concludes, the narrative shifts from Rhiannon to Arawn, who is revealed to be the main character of the game. The story continues with the Gael tribe’s journey to the nearby island of Albion (also called Insula Britannica on in-game maps), in an effort to escape the Empire’s reach.
