Tengen, an Atari subsidiary, released an unauthorized version of Tetris for the Nintendo Entertainment System. After losing a legal battle to Nintendo, which had obtained the rights from Russia to bring the game to home consoles (they already held the rights for handheld versions), Tengen was forced to destroy all remaining unsold cartridges. The Tengen version included a two-player simultaneous mode that wasn't present in Nintendo's release.
