Summary
The Godfather: Blackhand Edition is the top-rated version of The Godfather on Gamerankings and IGN, even though it received lower scores from some other outlets. It includes 20 standard missions, ten brand-new hit missions, a brand-new rival family exclusive to the hit missions, rooftop combat, new side jobs, and additional gameplay elements like blackmail and bribery.
The Blackhand Edition introduces a second playthrough option, the operator path. The main way to progress is by blackmailing law enforcement, the FBI, or members of other families, and the player’s choices and dialogue influence the story’s direction. While the enforcer’s objective is to eliminate rival families through direct force, the operator’s goal is to gather enough "evidence" on the police chiefs of the five boroughs to blackmail them. Once successful, the bribe meter fills to maximum each time the player interacts with the chief, letting them take control of the local police force. The police then assist the player’s crew, helping to arrest or eliminate enemies. The operator path also provides unique tactical advantages not available to the enforcer, such as improved and regenerating health, the ability to summon a four-man hit squad more frequently, stronger crew damage and health, the option to plant car bombs and perform instant stealth takedowns, and reduced costs for bribing police and FBI officials.
