The Great Gatsby is a platform game based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel of the same name. Taking loose inspiration from the book's characters and settings, the game follows Nick Carraway as he progresses through four key levels. It is humorously claimed to be a localized, never-released version of the Japanese NES title Doki Doki Toshokan: Gatsby no Monogatari, with the creators even fabricating fake ads, credits, and a mock-up cartridge image. In reality, it's a completely original browser-based game designed to mimic the style of classic 8-bit NES platformers.
The story begins at Gatsby's lavish party in his mansion, where Nick then boards a moving train heading to New York and eventually arrives at West Egg Beach. The controls are straightforward: the character can jump and toss his hat to defeat enemies like butlers, henchmen, crabs, birds, and alligators. Along the way, he can gather coins and items such as drinks to earn points. After accumulating a specific number of points, the player is rewarded with an extra life. Nick starts with three lives, each with three health points. He can also find a yellow hat, which changes his outfit and lets him throw his hat a greater distance. Between levels, there are brief interactions with characters, boss battles, and animated cut-scenes.
