
The Last Story is set on the island fortress of Lazulis, in a world gradually being stripped of life by a mysterious force. The narrative follows a band of mercenaries seeking employment on the island, among them Zael, who aspires to become a knight. Throughout the game, players take control of Zael as he and his mercenary team carry out various missions across Lazulis. Zael can direct his squad during these missions and engages in battles that blend action, strategy, and stealth elements.
Trapped in a never-ending war, the Empire has steadily crumbled under the unyielding pressure of opposing forces. Yet, even as the mainland falters, a nearly unbreakable final defense remains, standing tall and offering a glimmer of hope to the entire realm. This bastion of hope is Lazulis Island, governed by the esteemed Count Arganan. Through the use of an army of weapons that magically—and enigmatically—draw creatures into a single area, the island has become a marvel of untapped strength. Among those drawn to the island in pursuit of opportunity is Zael, a young man who lost his family at an early age when his homeland fell to the ravages of war. Despite the scorn and fear his group of mercenary companions often faces due to their lowly status, they soon capture the attention of Count Arganan himself. If they can complete the challenges set before them by the Count, they may finally achieve the noble rank they have long aspired to—knighthood. It is during one of these assigned missions that Zael uncovers a secret location, bestowing upon him a remarkable and oddly familiar ability to bring his foes together in one place…
