The Order: 1886 presents a striking reimagining of Victorian London, where humanity wields cutting-edge technology to fight a formidable and ancient enemy. As part of an elite brotherhood of knights, step into a long-forgotten conflict that will shape the destiny of the world forever.
The Order: 1886 is set in an alternate version of London, where a secret brotherhood of knights protects the world from monstrous half-breeds—creatures that are part human and part animal. In the game's timeline, during the seventh or eighth century, a few humans began to display animalistic traits. Most people were terrified of these beings, and conflict erupted. Though the half-breeds were outnumbered, their animal-like strength allowed them to dominate in centuries of warfare. Centuries later, a new hope emerges in the form of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Arthur and his loyal knights launch a campaign against the half-breeds, but he soon realizes the battle is not going in their favor. A twist of fate leads the Knights to discover Black Water, a magical substance that greatly extends their lifespans and enhances their healing. Even with this advantage, the half-breeds continue to dominate the battlefield—until the Industrial Revolution changes the balance. Visionary inventors create advanced technologies like thermal vision, airships, and wireless communication. New weapons harness electricity, unleash waves of molten metal, and serve multiple roles as fragmentation grenades and proximity mines. By 1886, the war is still raging, but the Knights have nearly imposed martial law. A new danger arises as the working class begins to rise up against the wealthy elite, with the Knights backing the aristocracy and nobility. The game follows four main characters from the same unit, each with a personal name and the legacy name of one of the original Knights. The eldest is Sebastian Mallory, the second to take the name Sir Percival, and a descendant of Thomas Mallory, the 1400s author of Le Morte d'Arthur, the most famous Arthurian chronicle. A close ally of Grayson, he is considered one of the greatest Knights in the Order's history. Grayson is the third to carry the name Sir Galahad, and has been waging war against the Order's enemies for centuries. He sees Mallory as a mentor, Lafayette as a brother, and Isabeau as a possible romantic partner. Beyond that, not much is known about him yet. Isabeau D'Argyll is one of the younger Knights, though she is far older than her late twenties appearance suggests. As the latest Lady Igraine, she was once Grayson's apprentice and would have been his lover had she not remained devoted to the Order. Marquis de Lafayette, a French officer who fought in both the American and French Revolutions, joined the Knights after Mallory recruited him for his strategic brilliance. Though the youngest of the group, his world travels have given him a lighthearted, grounded perspective. As an apprentice, he has yet to earn the name of a Knight.
