Storyline
Guybrush Threepwood, a young man eager to become a great pirate, journeys to Melee Island, a haven for pirates. Upon arrival, he encounters three "important-looking pirates" at the SCUMM Bar, who present him with three challenges to prove his worth. These include besting the legendary insult sword-fighting expert Carla, locating buried treasure, and stealing a statue from the governor's mansion. During a failed heist at the mansion, he meets and falls for the governor, Elaine Marley. Meanwhile, the ghost pirate LeChuck, still heartbroken over Elaine, plots to kidnap her. As Guybrush completes his trials, LeChuck and his ghostly crew seize Elaine and take her to Monkey Island. Once the trials are done, Guybrush learns of her capture and buys a ship from Stan, a secondhand ship dealer who warns him he'll need a crew of four. He assembles Carla, the sword-fighting master he once defeated, Meathook, a pirate with hooks for hands, and Otis, a prisoner from Melee Island's jail. With his crew in place, Guybrush sets sail to rescue Elaine.
