The Sims: Livin' Large, referred to as The Sims: Livin' It Up in Europe, serves as the first expansion for The Sims, introducing new characters, professions, objects, and gameplay features. Unlike subsequent expansions, it doesn't follow a single theme, though many of its additions incorporate sci-fi, fantasy, or supernatural themes, including the full Paranormal career path.
The game introduces new characters like Servo the Tragic Clown and the Grim Reaper. Santa Claus will visit if a Sim places cookies next to a Christmas tree and a fireplace, leaving gifts underneath the tree. The Tragic Clown shows up for sad Sims who own the Tragic Clown painting, attempting to cheer them up, but always with little success. Sims can catch an illness from being bitten by the guinea pig included in the expansion. The Grim Reaper conducts the last rites for Sims who have passed away. While still alive, Sims can beg the Reaper to spare them, leading to one of three outcomes: death, revival, or turning into a zombie. Livin' Large adds a variety of new items, including a crystal ball, electric guitar, chemistry set, and a magic lamp. Some of these items are linked to new characters—like a genie emerging from the lamp and a Servo appearing at a booth. This expansion also brings in several new neighborhoods, giving players the option to build up to five brand new ones.
