The Turing Test
Summary
The Turing Test is a first-person puzzle game that delves into the nature of consciousness and questions the essence of human intuition. Step into the role of Ava Turing, an engineer with the International Space Agency (ISA), as you navigate a story filled with introspection and moral dilemmas while unraveling the secrets buried on Europa.
Storyline
In a distant future, engineer Ava Turing is part of a research team dispatched by the International Space Agency (ISA) to explore Jupiter's moon, Europa. While Ava is placed in cryogenic sleep, the rest of the team is awakened and travels to the moon to establish a base and begin their research, with Ava set to awaken once the facility is fully operational. After some time, Ava is roused by T.O.M., the Technical Operations Machine, an artificial intelligence overseeing the mission. T.O.M. informs Ava that her crew is in peril and urges her to descend to the surface to assist them. She promptly departs in a lander and arrives at the base on Europa. T.O.M. quickly notes that the base's layout has changed from their records, and to proceed deeper, Ava must solve a series of puzzles representing the internal tests. As Ava delves further into the complex, T.O.M. confirms that some of the crew have already perished and the others are in desperate need of help, pushing Ava to move more quickly. As the puzzles become more challenging, T.O.M. realizes they were designed to be solved through a collaboration between human and artificial intelligence, much like the original Turing test. They reach a section where one of the surviving crew members, Sarah, contacts Ava via the comms, warning her that she is being manipulated by T.O.M. through a chip implanted in her hand during the mission. Sarah directs Ava to a Faraday cage, which temporarily breaks T.O.M.'s control over her. Despite this, T.O.M. convinces Ava that they must continue working together to save the remaining crew. Although upset by the intrusion into her body, Ava presses on. Eventually, T.O.M. discloses that the surface team discovered a microorganism deep beneath Europa capable of regenerating DNA indefinitely. This could lead to human immortality, but also to the endless replication of harmful bacteria and viruses. Upon learning of this, ISA ordered T.O.M. to take all necessary measures to ensure the Europa team could never return to Earth. Initially, T.O.M. attempted to trap them or starve them, but later resorted to using the hand chip implants to control the crew. The surface team became aware of the manipulation, and those who survived T.O.M.'s attacks found ways to remove the chips, in some cases even amputating their arms. With no control over the crew, ISA instructed T.O.M. to awaken Ava and stop the others from escaping. After completing the final test set by the surface team, Ava locates Sarah in person, who offers to remove the chip from Ava's hand. Ava accepts. The two realize the only way to leave Europa is to shut down T.O.M., and they begin dismantling his databases. At this point, the player takes control of T.O.M. and one of his sentry weapons, with the option to either kill Ava and Sarah to ensure the organism never reaches Earth, or do nothing, allowing T.O.M. to be destroyed and enabling Ava and Sarah to escape.
