Thunder Force III

Summary

Thunder Force III is a side-scrolling shooter created by Technosoft and serves as the third installment in the Thunder Force series. It launched in 1990 in Japan, Europe, and North America for the Sega Genesis. The same year, it was adapted into an arcade version titled Thunder Force AC. In 1991, Thunder Force AC was brought to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System under the name Thunder Spirits.

Storyline

Thunder Force III is set approximately 100 years after the original Thunder Force and immediately follows the events of Thunder Force II. Although they've had some victories, the Galaxy Federation is struggling in its ongoing conflict with the ORN Empire. To complicate matters, ORN has equipped five key planets within their domain with cloaking technology, hiding their central base and making it nearly impossible for the Galaxy Federation to target their command center. Furthermore, ORN has developed an advanced long-range defense system known as Cerberus, which is highly effective at dismantling large warships and armadas. In response, the Galaxy Federation designs the FIRE LEO-03 Styx—a compact yet powerful fighter capable of evading Cerberus' detection while packing the punch of a heavy starfighter. The mission of the player-piloted Styx is to disable the five cloaking devices, break into the Empire's stronghold, and ultimately eliminate the ORN ruler, the bio-computer "Cha Os."
