A unique fighting game with a quest mode from Square. The publisher brought in Seiichi Ishii, who had previously worked on Tekken and Virtua Fighter. Leveraging this talent, Square supported Ishii in founding his own development studio, Dream Factory, with Tobal No.1 being the first title from the new developer. The game introduced enhanced 3D movement, allowing for more behind-the-back attacks compared to other fighting games of the era. Tobal also featured a distinctive grapple mechanic, letting players grab opponents and execute a variety of throws based on button inputs. Characters are rendered using Gouraud shading in high-resolution mode (640x480), and the game came bundled with a demo of Final Fantasy VII.
