The J2ME edition of Tomb Raider: Legend is set in Tokyo, the third location featured in the original game. It's a side-scrolling platformer that uses polygon-based 3D visuals. The majority of the gameplay consists of moving left and right, leaping between platforms, and firing at Yakuza members who block Lara’s path. Players must navigate hazards like electrified wires and laser security systems by either jumping over or rolling beneath them. Occasionally, Lara must swing from poles or deploy her grappling hook to access distant platforms. The grappling hook can also be used to swing into enemies and take them out. Combat is straightforward, with Lara only able to use her standard handgun. Players can dodge bullets by crouching, but enemies are also capable of doing the same.
The game is set in Tokyo, where Lara embarks on a mission to retrieve Excalibur, the legendary sword of King Arthur, which has been broken into three parts. The first fragment is thought to be in the hands of a Japanese artifact collector named Takamoto, prompting Lara to travel to Tokyo to obtain it. The challenge is that Takamoto is a high-ranking Yakuza leader who certainly won't hand it over without a fight.
