Tomb Raider: The Action Adventure is an interactive movie based on Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. The game not only follows the same storyline as that title, but is completely constructed using video clips from it. As a result, the player views Lara from a third-person perspective, similar to other games in the series, as she runs, jumps, and climbs through the environments. However, for most of the time, the player cannot control her actions. At key moments, the video pauses, allowing the player to decide what Lara should do next. The game is primarily played using the directional buttons on the remote control, which change their function depending on Lara's surroundings. On-screen prompts show what each button does in a given situation, such as "jump," "climb stairs," or "open door." Some choices advance the game, while others lead to a Game Over. Certain options may be more difficult but reward the player with points, such as choosing to explore when time is limited. When enemies are present, the player can usually choose between shooting or performing a stealth attack. There are also some puzzles that involve picking up objects and using them in the correct location. In certain situations, a "play safe" option is available, acting as a skip feature where Lara automatically handles the challenge.
The game is based on a streamlined adaptation of the story from Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.
