Toride ("Fortress," sometimes called Pai Toride or "Mahjong Tile Fortress") is a mahjong solitaire game that was first released in Japan, initially in arcades and later on the Super Famicom in 1994. The arcade edition is occasionally known as "Last Fortress." The goal is to clear all the tiles from the board, following standard mahjong solitaire rules. However, to do this, players must place matching tiles at the bottom of the screen. The player's "hand" has a limited number of slots, and if it becomes filled with non-matching tiles, the game is lost. A timer counts down while the player is making decisions, but removing tile pairs can partially restore it. Certain special tiles act as power-ups, extending the timer. Like traditional mahjong solitaire, only identical tiles can be matched. An exception exists for the eight special season and flower tiles, which can be paired with any other season or flower tile—though the pair must consist of two seasons or two flowers.
