The Game Boy Color edition is a side-scrolling platformer that stands apart from the other versions. Players take control of Buzz, who can run, leap, and fire his laser at foes. The game includes 11 stages, with two additional bonus levels available if the player gathers all the coins in specific areas. Due to the Game Boy Color's two-button control scheme, both running and jumping are handled using the B button. When stationary, the player can jump and cross gaps, while running is triggered by pressing the B button while in motion. Progress is preserved using a password system.
The game's story is tied to the Toy Story 2 movie and starts at Andy's home when Al McWhiggin steals Woody during the family's yard sale. Buzz Lightyear, Hamm, Rex, Slinky, and Mr. Potato Head set out to locate and save Woody. After departing from Andy's house, the toys travel through the neighborhood where Andy resides, then head to Al's Toy Barn, the penthouse where Al lives, and ultimately the airport terminal and tarmac where the film concludes. Stinky Pete (also known as the Prospector) serves as the game's final boss, accompanied by two of his in-game assistants.
