Summary

In 2291, the legalization of consensual murder paved the way for an event once confined to the shadows. Smaller mining firms had previously hosted smaller matches to vent aggression, but it was the Liandri Mining Corporation that elevated the spectacle to a professional league, quickly turning it into a wildly profitable form of public entertainment. Liandri entered the Tournament—its official name—by backing their own team, the Corrupt. The team's leader, Xan Kriegor, swiftly claimed the champion title and held it for two years. In 2293, a human named Malcolm dethroned him and took the title for himself. Celebrated as a media icon, Malcolm became the most revered figure in human history, almost deified. His triumph brought immense profits to his sponsor, drawing the envy of rivals both within the Tournament’s arenas and in the distant political halls of a galaxy away. Liandri tried to reclaim the title with Xan MK2, but failed (a secret to all other competitors is that every member of the Corrupt is entirely robotic, including Xan). Now it is 2302. The Tournament is undergoing a major transformation. The outdated Sniper Rifle—once a staple of the competition—is being phased out, as is "Assault," a team-based event. Many fans are upset by these changes, with some fighters even refusing to compete in the new format. Shortly after his victory, Malcolm recruited two of his former adversaries, Brock and Lauren from the disbanded Iron Guard, to join his reformed Thunder Crash team. Meanwhile, the Axon Research Corporation, one of the four major corporations, has also entered the Tournament, backing the gene-enhanced Juggernaut team led by the ruthless and violent Gorge.
