You assume the role of an Uplink Agent, earning a living by taking on assignments for powerful corporations. Your duties range from infiltrating competitors' networks and stealing sensitive research, to sabotaging rival businesses, laundering funds, covering up traces of crime, or even setting up false accusations against the innocent. The income you generate is used to enhance your computer systems and acquire advanced software and tools. As your skills improve, you gain access to riskier and more lucrative operations. You can trade on a fully functional stock market — and even manipulate its results. You have the ability to alter academic or criminal records, siphon money from bank transactions into your own accounts, and even contribute to the development of the most devastating computer virus ever conceived.
You are a newly recruited agent for the clandestine underground hacking group known as "Uplink." The organization remains neutral, employing hackers who both help the unaware public and those driven by greed and a thirst for power over others. Soon, a series of strange hiring decisions by the Andromeda Research Corporation (ARC) emerge, and the story begins to take shape.
