Up'n Down is a vertical-scrolling game that uses a pseudo-3D viewpoint. The player steers a purple dune buggy modeled after a Volkswagen Beetle. The vehicle travels forward along a single-lane road; moving the joystick up or down adjusts the speed, left or right switches lanes at intersections, and pressing the "jump" button makes the buggy leap into the air. Jumping is essential to dodge oncoming cars—players can either leap over them or land on top for bonus points. To finish a round, the player must gather 10 colored flags by driving over them. If a flag is missed, it reappears later in the same round. The course includes hills and slopes that influence the buggy's speed, as well as bridges that require a jump to clear. A player loses a life if the buggy crashes into another vehicle without jumping, or if it goes off the road into the grass or water.
