Valkyria Chronicles is a tactical role-playing game created and published by Sega for the PlayStation 3 in 2008. A version for Microsoft Windows was launched on November 11, 2014. A remastered edition for PlayStation 4 was made available in Japan on February 10, 2016, with a Western release scheduled for May 2016. Both the PC and PS4 versions feature previously released downloadable content. The story takes place in the fictional continent of Europa, inspired by real-world Europe during the early stages of World War II. Due to its rich supply of Ragnite ore, which functions as an alternative to petroleum in the game’s world, the neutral country of Gallia becomes a target of the East Europan Imperial Alliance, a faction already at war with the Atlantic Federation. Players lead a squad from the Gallian Militia, tasked with defending the nation from invasion. The game's art style, powered by Sega's CANVAS graphics engine, gives the appearance of animated pencil sketches.
In the year 1935 E.C., the continent of Europa is ruled by two dominant powers: the authoritarian East Europan Imperial Alliance in the east and the Atlantic Federation, a coalition of loosely connected democracies in the west. The economies of both nations rely heavily on a rare and versatile mineral known as Ragnite. As supplies dwindle, the Empire declares war on the Federation, igniting the Second Europan War. Leveraging its military strength, the Empire swiftly pushes the Federation onto the back foot. Encouraged by their early victories, the Empire turns its attention to the neutral Principality of Gallia, aiming to control its abundant Ragnite reserves. When Imperial troops attack the border town of Bruhl, Welkin Gunther, the son of the late Gallian hero General Belgen Gunther, is thrust into battle alongside Captain Alicia Melchiott of the town watch. With the help of Welkin's adopted sister Isara and using his father’s prototype tank from the previous war, the Edelweiss, they flee to Gallia’s capital, Randgriz, and later enlist in the nation’s militia. Welkin is promoted to lieutenant and placed in charge of the newly established Squad 7, with Alicia serving as his non-commissioned officer. At first, the squad is skeptical of Welkin’s leadership due to his lack of battlefield experience, but he soon wins their respect and devotion through his strategic brilliance. Welkin and Alicia eventually begin a romantic relationship.
