Wheel of Fortune was the first NES game based on the popular TV game show. It was developed by Rare and launched in the same month as their NES version of Jeopardy!. Rare later released two additional NES versions of the show: Wheel of Fortune: Junior Edition and Wheel of Fortune: Family Edition. The game follows the same format as the television show, where players spin a wheel and then attempt to solve a hangman-style puzzle by guessing consonants or using their earnings to buy vowels. Up to three players can take turns in a pass-and-play setup. Players must enter their answers within a time limit using the game's text input system.
