Summary
Winter Olympic Games is the officially licensed title for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. The European release, titled Winter Gold, lacks the official license but remains otherwise identical in content and gameplay.
Players can represent one of 20 different countries across seven winter sports: downhill skiing, biathlon, ski jumping, bobsleigh, slalom skiing, short track speed skating, and freestyle moguls. Each event can be practiced individually before entering official competition. The competition mode offers flexibility—players can choose to complete the full set of events, only the first or second half, focus solely on downhill disciplines, or exclude them entirely.
Gameplay mechanics and camera angles vary by event. Downhill skiing is presented in an isometric view, with the player controlling the athlete's path relative to the screen. Players can crouch to gain speed or bring their skis together to slow down. In freestyle and ski jumping, specific buttons are used to trigger jumps. Biathlon is displayed in a side-scrolling format, where buttons control acceleration, factoring in the athlete's stamina as shown on a heart meter. Shooting is performed by aligning a crosshair with targets and pressing a button. Short track is viewed from above, with movement controlled by alternating left and right inputs on the d-pad. Bobsleigh is played from a third-person 3D perspective behind the sleigh.
