The game features a top-down perspective of a simplified soccer match (there are no fouls, substitutions, or tactical plays). Players need to dribble and pass the ball toward one end of the field, aiming to score by getting the ball into the opponent's goal.
This is the second officially licensed FIFA World Cup franchise game based on the 1990 FIFA World Cup, featuring the official logo and mascot, with the first being the short-lived and obscure World Cup Carnival for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. The game includes authentic groupings, teams, and an accurate schedule of the tournament. The gameplay is viewed from a top-down perspective. U.S. Gold ported the game to DOS, Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, and ZX Spectrum. The ZX Spectrum version reached number 2 in the UK sales charts, just behind *Manchester United*. After the World Cup, the game was re-released as *World Championship Soccer* and later renamed *Sega Soccer* on the Mega 6 compilation cartridge for the Mega Drive, omitting the Virgin Mastertronic credits. In Brazil, it was released under the title *Super Futebol II*. In *World Cup Italia 90*, players can choose to represent any of the teams that competed in the actual tournament, with no option to participate in qualifying matches to reach the World Cup.
