Summary
Just like its first installment, Yo-kai Watch 2 is an open-world role-playing game in which players take control of either the main character Nathan Adams or Katie Forester. Exploring the open world is done via the Nintendo 3DS touchscreen, allowing players to discover and befriend a variety of Yo-kai spread throughout the map. To befriend a Yo-kai, players must offer it a favorite food before battle, and once defeated, the Yo-kai will approach the player and hand over its Yo-kai Medal, enabling it to be called upon whenever needed. A new addition to battles is the use of the touchscreen to locate a specific sweet spot on an enemy Yo-kai, which can boost the chances of befriending it or provide other benefits like increased damage, more money, or additional experience. Yo-kai can also be obtained through the in-game Crank-a-kai (Gasha Machine) by spending in-game currency or Play Coins. Some Yo-kai are essential for completing the main storyline, while rare Yo-kai are unlocked through special subquests. These creatures can evolve into stronger forms when they reach a certain level, or by using specific items or fusing with other Yo-kai. The Yo-kai are grouped into eight distinct classes, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. There are also Legendary Yo-kai that can only be unlocked by collecting a specific set of Yo-kai listed in the Yo-kai Medallium, a catalog of all Yo-kai the player has met or befriended. When a Yo-kai is encountered, the player engages in battle using six of their previously befriended Yo-kai. During combat, the touchscreen is used to switch between the player’s Yo-kai freely. It can also be used to remove status effects or charge up a Yo-kai’s Soultimate abilities. While the original Yo-kai Watch featured around 250 Yo-kai, Yo-kai Watch 2 includes nearly 450, with some returning as bosses from the first game.
