Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule: Breed and Battle, commonly referred to as "MCBB," marks the debut of the Yu-Gi-Oh! video game series, launched by Konami on July 23, 1998 for the PlayStation. It presents a more advanced version of the Capsule Monster Chess game seen in the manga. Monster Capsule: Breed and Battle is the sole video game to include Capsule Monster Chess, although Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule GB offers a modified take on the game with many of the same monsters from MCBB, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monster Coliseum introduces the spinoff game Capsule Monsters.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule: Breed and Battle mainly showcases characters from the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga series. Players nurture and train Capsule Monsters to compete against rivals in a tournament. Rivals include Yugi Mutou, Katsuya Jonouchi, Anzu Mazaki, Mokuba Kaiba, Ryo Bakura, Sugoroku Mutou, Seto Kaiba, and Dark Yugi.
