Badlands serves as the spiritual follow-up to Atari's earlier racing titles, Super Sprint and Championship Sprint. Much like the Sprint series, Badlands features three cars competing in a three-lap race around a compact, single-screen track. Players can collect bonuses in the form of wrenches, which can be exchanged for upgrades like increased speed, better acceleration, or improved tires. What sets Badlands apart from the Sprint games is its expansion of the formula, placing the action in a post-apocalyptic setting and giving each player a cannon. In practice, the cannons mainly serve to slow down cars by firing at them repeatedly. However, between levels, players can visit a shop to equip their car with missiles that can destroy an opponent's vehicle, putting them at a serious disadvantage as a replacement car is introduced to the track, causing a brief delay. The tracks also introduce new hazards, such as landmines and retractable barriers.
