Summary
Blitz: The League is an American football title developed by Midway as an unofficial continuation of their NFL Blitz franchise. It came out in October 2005 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, following the NFL’s exclusive licensing agreement with Electronic Arts. This entry in the series was the first to earn an "M" rating from the ESRB, due to its depiction of intense violence, strong language, and drug use. Voice actor Lawrence Taylor, who lends his voice to the game, also served as its official spokesperson. A second edition of the game launched on the Xbox 360 in October 2006, and a portable version titled Blitz: Overtime was released on PlayStation Portable in December 2006. These versions featured the voice and likeness of former NFL linebacker Bill Romanowski. Originally planned as a Wii launch title, the Wii version was postponed and ultimately scrapped.
On January 22, 2007, the game was denied classification by Australia’s Office of Film and Literature Classification, effectively making it illegal in the country. The ban was due to the portrayal of drug use as part of the game’s incentives and rewards system.
