Block Hole blends Tetris-like mechanics with fixed shooter gameplay in the tradition of Space Invaders. The player's attention is directed toward falling blocks, with the action centered around geometric patterns. Instead of stacking blocks to clear rows, a spaceship at the bottom of the screen fires blocks upward to complete squares or rectangles from the falling shapes. When a shape is successfully formed, it vanishes and the player earns points depending on its size. Blocks continue to descend from the top in a variety of incomplete configurations. As the game progresses through levels, the speed and frequency of the falling blocks increase. Additional power-ups can be collected to enhance the ship's speed and provide other advantages. The game ends when the blocks reach the dotted line at the bottom of the screen, at which point the player's ship is "quarthed," flattened by the accumulation.
