Storyline
Although its characters, themes, and weapons are reminiscent of samurai cinema set in Feudal Japan, Bushido Blade is actually set in the modern day—as seen, for instance, in a level where the player arrives at a helicopter landing pad in a sprawling metropolis. Within this world exists a fictional 500-year-old dojo called Meikyokan, which trains in the martial arts of the master Narukagami Shinto. Also based at the dojo is a secretive group of assassins known as Kage ("Shadow"). Once led by the noble swordsman Utsusemi, he was overthrown in a brutal duel by Hanzaki, another highly skilled member of the school. Hanzaki earned recognition as the new Kage leader until he uncovered a cursed blade named Yugiri, which gradually corrupted him, causing him to abandon the group's values and traditions. One day, a Kage assassin flees the dojo with its hidden knowledge. Several other members are then ordered to pursue and eliminate the runaway, facing the death penalty if they fail. The chase leads them to the ruins of the nearby Yin and Yang Labyrinth Castle, where they finally catch up with the defector. In single-player mode, the player assumes the role of the escaped assassin (regardless of the character chosen), battling through the castle and defeating their former comrades one by one. The narrative of the game shifts depending on which character is selected.
