Chessmaster offers a wide range of tools to help you sharpen your chess abilities, regardless of your skill level. In Chess School, you can master both fundamental and advanced strategies before facing off against computer-controlled adversaries in single-player or multiplayer settings. The game features multiple gameplay options, including Quick Game, Rated Play, Handicap, Setup Position, and Puzzle. Observe as each piece engages in battle on the iconic checkered board. The PlayStation 2 version of the Chessmaster series includes most of the features found in its PC counterpart, Chessmaster 9000. You can play training matches with full access to hints and analysis tools, participate in rated games where your rating adjusts after each match, tackle chess puzzles (not the picture-based kind), study the game through the extensive tutorials in Pandolfini's Chess School, or watch classic matches unfold. The PS2 edition also introduces some new elements. The most valuable addition is the Online mode. Another is the "living world" of the Chessmaster Championships, where the AI's rating fluctuates as they compete against each other. The final feature is a more visually striking mode: a fantasy-themed game where orcs battle humans, complete with animated chess sets and a 3D environment. You can play chess in a lush forest, within a grand castle, or across a vast desert.
