Chō Jikū Yōsai Macross: Skull Leader is inspired by the anime series Macross, covering its early episodes and centering on one of its main characters, Hikaru Ichijyo. Similar to Remember Me, it is a turn-based strategy game, but it should not be seen as a follow-up, as it doesn't continue the previous story and features distinct gameplay mechanics. Combat unfolds on an isometric battlefield. Rather than managing individual spacecraft and mechs as in Remember Me, players assign human commanders who each lead multiple units. Players can adjust formations to gain the upper hand in battle. Commanders move across the map in a turn-based system. When an enemy comes into range, the player selects an attack method to use. The resulting battle then plays out on a separate screen, automatically.
It's 2009, and Earth's most formidable weapon is the Super Dimensional Fortress One, commonly referred to as "Macross," an alien spacecraft packed with advanced technology. One pivotal day, a massive armada of the Zentradi, a warrior species from another world, triggered Macross' automated defenses, unintentionally igniting the first Space War.
