In Dark Sceptre, the objective is to retrieve the namesake artifact. The player leads a group of warriors by assigning them individual missions, while competing against six rival computer-controlled factions. The main screen displays a side-view of the currently selected warrior, following and adjusting to their movement throughout the game world. Each warrior holds a rank, from Thane, the commanding officer, down to Thrall, the lowest-ranking unit. Other ranks include Mystics, Heralds, Savages, and Assassins. The game is played in real-time, with the player pausing to give orders in Plan mode and then observing the outcomes in Watch mode. Commands are chosen from a menu and include character-focused actions such as KILL, AVOID, BRIBE, or STALK, object-related actions like SEEK, TAKE, or USE, and location-based actions such as DEFEND or ROAM.
