Dragon Quest IV was re-released for the Sony PlayStation in Japan. The remake was developed by Heartbeat and published by Enix. It utilized the 3D graphics engine from Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. This version introduced several new elements, including an additional chapter, a new character, a bustling town similar to the one in VII, an inter-party conversation command akin to Dragon Quest VII, and the option to disable AI for party members. Enix of America Corporation had initially planned to release the remake in North America in 2002, but the project was eventually cancelled after Heartbeat ceased its video game development activities.
