
Dragon Quest VI is the sixth entry in the Dragon Quest series. It serves as the second-to-last game for the Nintendo Super Famicom and marks the conclusion of the Zenithia trilogy, as well as the first title in the franchise developed by Heartbeat instead of Chunsoft. As with all other Dragon Quest titles, the world of Dragon Quest VI is deeply rooted in a medieval atmosphere, featuring castles, knights, and magic. The game’s world is split into the Lower World and the Upper World, each offering a distinct yet thematically similar map. Travel between the two realms is achieved through special warps—like those found in wells—or by climbing and descending massive staircases on the overworld map.
Dragon Quest VI begins with the Hero and his companions—a mysterious woman and a large man—approaching Murdaw, the demon king’s fortress. After the woman plays an ocarina to summon a dragon, the group enters the castle and confronts Murdaw himself. The demon king quickly overwhelms the trio, seemingly defeating each member of the party. But then, the Hero awakens in the mountain village of Weaver's Peak. Tania, a young woman from the town, tells him he was just having a nightmare and introduces herself as his sister.
