Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a first-person shooter developed by Splash Damage and released by Activision for Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. As a prequel to Quake II, it takes place in the same sci-fi universe as Quake II and Quake 4, offering a brief backstory that leads into Quake II. It is the second game in the Quake series to focus primarily on multiplayer action, following Quake III Arena. The gameplay of Quake Wars is reminiscent of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, but with added elements such as drivable vehicles and aircraft, multiple deployable AI units, asymmetrical team structures, expansive maps, and the ability to play against computer-controlled bots. Unlike earlier Enemy Territory titles, Quake Wars is a paid release rather than a free download. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was generally well-received at launch, though it faced some criticism on console platforms.
