Summary

Fear Effect is an action-packed adventure ready to ignite! Wee Ming Lam vanishes just days before her 18th birthday under enigmatic conditions. Three merciless mercenaries plot to locate her and demand a ransom from her father, Mr. Lam, a formidable Triad boss in Hong Kong. What begins as a mission to secure Wee Ming Lam quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival against foes beyond imagination.

Storyline

Set in the year 2050, the story follows Wee Ming, the daughter of a feared Hong Kong Triad leader, who vanishes without a trace. A team of three mercenaries, not hired to locate her, instead set out to abduct the girl before her father's enforcers can find and ransom her. Wee Ming has disappeared into the fictional Shan Xi protectorate, where Hana Tsu-Vachel, the group's enigmatic and dangerous leader, once worked in a brothel. Hana arrives in Hong Kong with her two partners, Royce Glas and Jacob "Deke" DeCourt. What was meant to be a straightforward abduction spirals into chaos: Wee Ming's father, Mr. Lam, owes his power and wealth to a long-forgotten pact with demons. Wee Ming, a living paper doll, is destined to be a sacrifice to Yim Lau Wong, the legendary "King of Hell". Hana's inside contact, Jin, is discovered, tortured, and left to die with a bomb attached to his body. Hana manages to free him, but he dies shortly after. Glas is attacked by a VTOL jet and forced to take refuge in Mr. Lam's headquarters. After avenging Jin, Hana is captured and brutally beaten by Mr. Lam and his men. Glas rescues her, and the two escape to meet Deke at their hotel. As they listen to Jin's final message, the trio is pushed off a bridge but manage to swim to a junk. While navigating a river, Deke spots Wee Ming in a burning village. Deke and Glas pursue her while Hana changes, but they are soon separated by the undead villagers. They come across a military train where soldiers are shooting anyone in fear of the villagers. Hana and Deke sabotage the train in an attempt to steal it, but Glas finds a jeep with Wee Ming inside. She begs to be taken to Madam Chen's restaurant, which also functions as a brothel, in search of answers about her origins. When Glas is caught sneaking into the brothel, Mr. Lam ambushes him and severs his left arm. At the same time, Deke is killed while trying to infiltrate the brothel from above. Hana sneaks in disguised as a prostitute and reunites with Wee Ming, who had been taken by Madam Chen, Mr. Lam's ally. Wee Ming's powers awaken after being splashed with Deke's blood, transforming the brothel's workers and Madam Chen's henchmen into demons. Glas awakens in a meat locker, shocked to be alive, and deduces that Mr. Lam is preparing a slow, cruel death for him. Wee Ming arrives and tries to help. When Hana confronts Madam Chen, she discovers that Chen is a demon in disguise. In the ensuing battle, Chen and her followers are killed, but Mr. Lam escapes with Wee Ming through a portal to Hell. Determined to save her, Hana follows them through the portal, while Glas regains consciousness and pursues. In a surreal descent into Hell, Hana encounters the Black and White Guards of Impermanence, who deliver cryptic prophecies about her destiny. Glas faces the reanimated corpse of Deke, who is being tormented for his past sins. Deke transforms into a grotesque demon and attacks Glas. After defeating him, Glas vows to avenge his former partner. Meanwhile, Hana confronts Yim Lau Wong, who reveals that Hell is overflowing with guilty souls. Wee Ming's return to the netherworld will allow Yim Lau Wong to expand Hell and eventually consume Earth. Hana was chosen to protect Wee Ming because the King of Hell sought a "ruthless" guardian. Glas reappears and attempts to kill Wee Ming, convinced she is the source of the chaos. In the tense standoff between Hana and Glas, the player is given a choice: decide who should die. This choice determines the final boss and the game's ending. On the "Hard" difficulty, a third option becomes available: spare both Glas and Hana. In this ending, the two emerge from the smoldering brothel wreckage and find a confused Deke sitting on a toilet. Deke has no memory of his death, thinking he only took a bump to the head, and asks how the "deal" went. As he climbs out of the pit, Glas is stunned to find his missing arm has been restored. The three walk off into the sunrise, ready for their next mission.
